Sex Offender Registry Information

Mandated sex offenders who attend any college or campus within the District must register with the appropriate jurisdictional law enforcement agency in accordance with federal regulations.

  • Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) (20 U.S.C. 1232g)
  • Campus Sex Crimes Prevention Act (42 U.S.C. § 14071)
  • The Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act (20 U.S.C. § 1092)
  • Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Act (42 U.S.C. § 16921)

A person convicted of sex offenses under California Penal Code § 290 who is enrolled as a student, or employed full-time or part-time (with or without compensation), or is carrying on a vocation (e.g. contractor), at a community college for more than 14 days, or for an aggregate period exceeding thirty (30) days in a calendar year is required to register within 5 days of commencing enrollment or employment (§ 290.009). Violation of the requirement is a misdemeanor and may result in a fine, imprisonment, or both (§ 290.018a).

California Penal Code also requires registrants to notify the appropriate law enforcement agency within five working days of ceasing to be enrolled, employed, or ceasing to continue a vocation (e.g., contractor) at a community college.

Furthermore, California Penal Code § 290.1(d)(1), allows law enforcement to release sex offender registration information to members of the campus community.

Campus Reporting Procedures

Registrants under California Penal Code § 290 must inform Safety and Risk Management/Campus Safety at the time of student enrollment and/or employment. Registrants must also notify Safety and Risk Management/Campus Safety when no longer enrolled or employed.

Megan’s Law

California’s Megan’s Law (Penal Code § 290.46) mandates the California Department of Justice (DOJ) to notify the public about specified registered sex offenders.
